BANGI: Job seekers can check the validity and authenticity of employment agencies by visiting the Human Resources Ministry's website at www.mohr.gov.my.
There are some 1,200 agencies currently registered with the ministry.
The minister, Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, said job seekers, to
avoid being cheated, should ensure the agencies were genuine before registering and paying for job applications.
Commenting on the New Sunday Times front page report yesterday about employment agency scams, he said that under the Private Employment Agencies Act 1981, private employment agencies were only allowed to collect RM12 in registration fees.
"But after the applicant has secured a job, it will then depend on the agreement signed between the applicant, employer and agency," he said after presenting prizes to winners of the OSH Walkathon.
The event was held in conjunction with World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2008 here yesterday.
The NST reported that some agencies advertised jobs in newspapers and on the Internet, luring people with the promise of a fat salary at the end of every week.
The catch was, applicants were required to pay the agencies between RM180 and RM200 in "administration fees".
Subramaniam said
those who had been cheated by employment agencies should lodge a report with the Labour Department.
"The press also can help by asking these agencies to show their licences before they advertise.
"This will ensure that only valid vacancies from credible agencies are advertised," he added. -
